What is non-cholera diarrhoea?

Diarrhoea means passing loose or watery poo three or more times a day. It is usually caused by germs in the gut, such as viruses, bacteria or parasites.

Signs
Frequent loose, watery poo. The main danger is losing too much water (dehydration): sunken eyes, strong thirst, restlessness, or being very sleepy.
How it spreads
Through food or water that has poo in it, or from person to person when hands are not washed.
How to protect yourself
Drink safe water, use clean toilets, wash hands with soap, and keep food clean. Breastfeed babies only for 6 months. The rotavirus vaccine protects children.
Get medical help
Give oral rehydration salts (ORS) and zinc and keep feeding. Get help fast for blood in poo, diarrhoea lasting two weeks, or a child who is very sleepy or cannot drink.
