Syphilis

Is syphilis worse than usual anywhere?

Too little to compare in any country this week.

What is syphilis?

An infection passed on through sex, caused by bacteria. It can be prevented and cured, but many people have no signs.

Signs
First a painless sore on the genitals, bottom or mouth that heals by itself. Later a rash, often on the palms and soles of the feet.
How it spreads
Through oral, vaginal or anal sex, mostly by touching sores. A pregnant mother can pass it to her baby.
How to protect yourself
Use condoms every time. Get tested if at risk, and all pregnant women should be tested at their first check-up.
Get medical help
Get tested for any sore or unusual rash. Untreated, it can harm the brain and heart, and cause stillbirth in pregnancy. Penicillin cures it.
