“Found” means newly diagnosed in that year, not everyone living with cancer.

Every cancer newly found in a year is reported by hospitals across Japan, as the law requires, and the National Cancer Center adds them up. 2023 is the newest year.

Men 556,059 and women 437,406, as the summary page prints them; they add to four fewer than the total.

Set against the number of people, and counted as if Japan had the world's mix of ages so it can be compared with other places (adjusted for age to the world's population), 2023 is 272.5 new cancers for every 100,000 people. Adjusted instead to Japan's own population of 1985 it is 375.0, and to Japan's of 2015, 733.6: the same cancers, measured against three different populations.

The National Cancer Center estimates that 61.1 in 100 men and 50.1 in 100 women in Japan will be found to have cancer in their lifetime, about one in two, from 2023 figures.

About this reason

These are the centre's words, not Dooram's. Dooram gives a reason only when a named authority has given it. The share is an estimate, from 2015 figures.

Dooram has read nothing saying why one cancer is commoner in Japan than elsewhere, so it says nothing of the kind.

About this figure

The share of people with cancer alive five years on, divided by the share of people of the same age and sex across Japan who are alive five years on: the publisher's own measure, relative survival (相対生存率).

So 64.8 does not mean 64.8 in 100 people are alive; it means people with cancer were 64.8% as likely to be alive as everyone else of their age and sex. It covers the whole country and describes a large group, not any one person's chance.

About this figure

Rates are counted as if every prefecture had the same mix of ages (adjusted for age), so a prefecture with more old people is not ranked higher for that alone. A prefecture's rate is not any one person's risk.

Japan's 272.6 is the prefecture file's own row, so all three come from one file; the national file gives 272.5.

Only the prefectures read twice are drawn here; the file has all 47. Dooram has read no authority saying why one prefecture is higher than another, so it gives no reason.
