What is typhoid?

A serious infection caused by Salmonella Typhi bacteria. It gets into the blood and can be life-threatening.

Signs
A high fever that lasts a long time, tiredness, headache, feeling sick, belly pain, and constipation or diarrhoea. Some people get a rash.
How it spreads
Through food or water dirtied by an infected person's faeces. People can still pass it on after they feel better.
How to protect yourself
A typhoid vaccine can be given from 6 months of age. Drink safe water, eat food cooked well and served hot, and wash hands with soap.
Get medical help
See a health worker for a high fever that lasts several days; a blood test can confirm typhoid. Finish all the antibiotics given.
