What is bloody diarrhoea?

Diarrhoea with blood in it, also called dysentery. It is usually caused by germs in the gut, often a bacterium called Shigella.

Signs
Passing loose or watery poo three or more times a day, with blood in it. Fever and stomach pain are common.
How it spreads
Through food or drinking water dirtied by human or animal poo, and from person to person when hands are not washed.
How to protect yourself
Drink safe water, use a clean toilet, and wash hands with soap. Prepare and store food hygienically, and breastfeed babies only for their first six months.
Get medical help
Always see a health worker when there is blood in poo. Get help fast for signs of drying out: very sleepy, sunken eyes, unable to drink, or skin that springs back slowly when pinched.
