What is malaria?

Malaria is a serious illness caused by a tiny parasite carried by some mosquitoes. It can be prevented and cured.

Signs
Fever, chills and headache, usually 10 to 15 days after the bite. At first it can look like many other fevers.
How it spreads
Through the bite of an infected mosquito. It does not pass from person to person in everyday life.
How to protect yourself
Sleep under insecticide-treated nets, spray homes, use repellent, and cover up. Malaria vaccines protect young children in some areas. Travellers can take preventive medicine.
Get medical help
Get tested quickly for any fever where malaria is found. Go to emergency care for extreme tiredness, confusion, fits, hard breathing, dark pee, yellow skin or unusual bleeding.
