Is suspected cholera worse than usual in Quetta?

Dooram can't tell yet. Too few of Quetta's clinics reported in the last four weeks and in the same weeks of the last two years.

28 cases reported in week 39, when 48% of its clinics sent a report.

"Usual" is the same four weeks of the two years before. In 3 of those 8 weeks, fewer than half of Quetta's clinics sent a report, so the cases they show are not Quetta's usual, only how little was reported. In 3 of the last four weeks, fewer than half of its clinics sent a report, so a low count may only mean few reports. Dooram leaves out any week when fewer than half the clinics reported, and here too few weeks are left to compare.

How does Quetta compare with the rest of Pakistan?

Not compared. Each district is compared with its own usual, and Quetta cannot be this time.

What is suspected cholera?

A gut infection caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae, caught from dirty food or water. It can kill within hours if not treated.

Signs
Sudden, heavy, watery diarrhoea that dries the body out fast. Many infected people have no signs or only mild illness.
How it spreads
Through food or water dirtied by an infected person's faeces. It spreads most where clean water and toilets are lacking.
How to protect yourself
Drink safe water, use toilets and wash hands with soap. A cholera vaccine taken by mouth also helps protect people.
Get medical help
Start oral rehydration solution (ORS) at once and go to a clinic for heavy watery diarrhoea. Quick treatment saves lives.
