What is hepatitis A and E?

Hepatitis A and hepatitis E are infections that make the liver swollen and sore. Each is caused by its own virus. Most people get better completely.

Signs
Fever, tiredness, not wanting to eat, feeling sick or throwing up, tummy pain, dark pee, and yellow skin or eyes. Young children often have no signs at all.
How it spreads
Both come from eating food or drinking water that has the poo of an infected person in it. Dirty drinking water is a common cause, especially for hepatitis E.
How to protect yourself
Drink safe water, use clean toilets, and wash hands with soap. A vaccine protects against hepatitis A. A hepatitis E vaccine exists but only some countries use it.
Get medical help
See a doctor if your skin or eyes turn yellow or your pee turns dark. Pregnant women who fall ill need care quickly: hepatitis E can be very dangerous for them.
