What is hepatitis B, C and D?

Hepatitis B, C and D are virus infections of the liver. Hepatitis D only infects people who already have hepatitis B. Together they can cause lasting liver damage and liver cancer.

Signs
Many people feel nothing for years. Some get fever, tiredness, feeling sick, dark pee, pale poo, and yellow skin or eyes.
How it spreads
Through infected blood and body fluids: shared or unclean needles, unchecked blood transfusions, and sex. Hepatitis B also often passes from mother to baby at birth.
How to protect yourself
The hepatitis B vaccine also protects against hepatitis D. There is no hepatitis C vaccine. Avoid shared needles, insist on clean medical equipment, and use condoms.
Get medical help
Ask for a blood test if you might have been exposed. Medicines control hepatitis B and usually cure hepatitis C. Hepatitis D on top of hepatitis B is the most severe form.
